Inspired by Healthy Child Healthy World

“If you think you are too small to be effective, you have never been in bed with a mosquito.” – Betty Reese

This quote was part of the speech by Gary Hirshberg, co-founder of Stonyfield Organic whom sponsored an inspiration and awareness raising luncheon with Healthy Child Healthy World. I was fortunate enough to be part of 2 events last week focused on making this world a better, safer place for our children.

I have long been a fan and advocate for Healthy Child Healthy World, a non-profit organization who’s movement is motivated by one simple question: What’s more important than the health of your child? The organization was started in 1992 after Nancy and James Chuda tragically lost their 5 year old daughter to a preventable, non-genetic type of cancer that was caused by environmental factors. Now, Healthy Child Healthy World ignites the movement that empowers parents to protect children from harmful chemicals.

Healthy Child Healthy World explains that no one can do everything, but everyone can do something- starting by going to their website: healthychild.org.  You can find a wealth of information from practical advice and daily tips to downloadable recipes. Of course monetary donations are welcomed and appreciated, there are plenty of ways you can help and by following their tips you are ultimately helping children everywhere.  Here are their 5 easy steps to a healthy world:

1.    Avoid Pesticides

2.    Use Non-Toxic Products

3.    Clean Up Indoor Air

4.    Eat Healthy

5.    Be Wise With Plastics

A burning topic much discussed was Gary Hirshberg’s latest passion project Just Label It, a campaign to ensure that if a food contains genetically modified organisms or GMO’s, it must say so on the label.   While GMO’s will be getting their own blog post soon, even those who are unaware of the GMO controversy agree that we have the right to know what’s in our food – because we do.

The (organic, non GMO) cherry on my inspirational sundae was meeting Robyn O’Brian, author of The Unhealthy Truth and founder of Allergy Kids.  Robyn also sits on the advisory board for the Just Label It Campaign and is on the Board of Directors for Healthy Child. Together, Robyn, Gary, and the wonderful folks at Healthy Child Healthy World are fighting to make this world a healthier place like an environmental Dream Team.

It’s far too easy to slip into complacency due to what seems to be an insurmountable task or uphill battle.  Take a minute to read about these incredible people, get inspired, then get active.  We CAN make a difference on this planet, and our children deserve to grow up in a non-toxic environment.
